Suet Log

Suet is one of the most popular bird foods. It's the best food to attract woodpeckers. Other birds fond of suet are wrens, chickadees, nuthatches, kinglets, thrashers, creepers, cardinals, and starlings. Mixtures of suet and peanut butter may attract woodpeckers, goldfinches, juncos, cardinals, thrushes, jays, kinglets, bluebirds, wrens, and starlings.

Cut two or three good sized pieces of suet into small pieces, put them into a saucepan, over low heat and melt the liquid fat out. When there is enough liquid grease, put it into a clean soup can or dish, put suet back on stove and waited until more liquid comes out. Then mashed up the brown left-overs into the liquid and let it set.

Stuff soft suet in the holes of a log with perches, or other such feeder. Hang on feeder pole. The woodpeckers and chickadees just love it.

This Suet Log Feeder is very easy to construct. You will need a log, a screw on hook and perches. Even if you don't follow these instructions, the birds will still use whatever type of log feeder you construct.

  1. Cut a log that is approximately 9 1/2-10" in circumference with a length of 16". The log does not have to be straight.
  2. Drill a hole that is 1 1/4" round all the way through to the other side. Start at the top of the log.
  3. Drill another hole, again 1 1/4" round all the way through, but this time turn the log so that it does not line up with the first hole that was drilled. See Picture.
  4. Continue drilling the rest of the holes so that you have 4 total..
  5. (optional) Drill 8 holes, 1 1/2" in depth (not all the way through).
  6. The perch holes should be 1/4" below the 1 1/4" round holes that hold the suet. Perches should be at least 3" in length. Insert the perches and tighten.
  7. Screw the hook at the top for hanging.
  8. Fill the 1 1/4" holes with Suet. That's it!
