Spiked Hot Chocolate
Best Alcohol for Hot Chocolate
When it comes to picking the best liquor for hot cocoa, you have lots of options. Keep it simple by using your favorite liquor (dark spirits work well), or add extra flavor with a tasty liqueur. Godiva chocolate liqueur and Baileys Irish Cream come up in a lot of recipes. Here are some ideas:
- Amaretto - This delicious almond-flavored liqueur pairs wonderfully with chocolate. A hazelnut liqueur, like Frangelico, would also work well.
- Peppermint Schnapps - Chocolate + peppermint is a classic holiday pairing! There are lots of schnapps options ... I used Hiram Walker, which is inexpensive and easy to find.
- Raspberry - Raspberry liqueur is the heavenly addition to your hot choc that you didn't realize you needed. Treat yourself to a bottle of Chambord ... it's little pricey, but so worth it!
- Coffee - A splash of coffee liquor will turn your drink into a mocha dream. Kahlua is the standard choice, but there are other options out there if you want to experiment.
- Chocolate - Godiva or Crème de cacao. Godiva is no longer making chocolate liqueur. Mozart Chocolate Liqueur is often cited as the closest replacement, offering both dark (bitter notes, Mozart Dark Chocolate Liqueur - no cream) and cream (milk chocolate richness, Mozart Chocolate Cream Liqueur) versions.
- Baileys Irish Cream - Many love the creamy goodness of Baileys Irish Cream in their hot chocolate. Baileys, with its mouthwatering flavors of cream, chocolate, and vanilla, is a classic addition to adult hot chocolate for a reason. Yum!
- Cinnamon - Forget those memories of shooting liquid fire back in the day, because cinnamon and chocolate a meant to be friends.
- Caramel - Chocolate and caramel make a crave-worthy pairing, so treat yourself! Try it with Smirnoff Kissed Caramel or Godiva Caramel Liqueur ... both would work great.
- Grand Marnier or Cointreau - When you want a touch of citrus in your cocoa, add a shot of one of the orange-flavored liqueurs. Grand Marnier is made with cognac, so it will also bring notes of vanilla and oak to the party.
- Other Liquors / Liqueurs - Have fun experimenting with other bottles, too. Something dark, like Brandy, Rum, Whiskey, or Bourbon, will work well.
Topping Ideas - whipped cream, marshmallows or marshmallow tipping, shaved chocolate, crushed peppermints, sprinkle of ground cinnamon. Toast large marshmallows under the broiler for a special twist. In addition to spiking your hot chocolate, try adding Chambord or Baileys to cream for an excellent, boozy whipped cream. If you’re going with peppermint as the alcohol for your hot chocolate, make it extra festive with a peppermint stick for stirring.
Good combinations I have tried:
- Godiva Chocolate Liquer, which is a little creamy, and Amaretto, almond flavor, with whipped cream on top. It was a little sweet.
Some Hot Chocolate Drinks at Bars:
- The coolest place in Vegas to try boozy hot chocolate may be the Ice Bar. The menu includes hot chocolate spiked with Baileys or Kahlua topped with crushed peppermint and fluffy marshmallows. This over-the-top winter wonderland experience is not to be missed!
- Another good choice is the Peppermint Patty, which consists of hot chocolate spiked with peppermint schnapps and topped with whipped cream and crushed peppermints, or in Omaha at Mr. Toads in the Old Market, enjoy peppermint schnapps and dark creme de cacao in hot chocolate.
- Or add Grand Marnier and top it with whipped cream and orange zest, really bringing out the orange flavor.
- For a luscious Mexican hot chocolate, add tequila or dark rum to your traditional recipe.
- Another good combination is vodka, Kahlua, and hot chocolate.
- Visit Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar and try their version of spiked hot chocolate in NYC, which includes homemade hot chocolate, Frangelico, and Hennessy cognac.
