Blueberry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie

Oatmeal smoothies are the perfect smoothies for breakfast, lunch or a healthy snack. We know what you're thinking: Oats…in a smoothie?! But it's not as crazy as it may sound. Love the idea of a smoothie for breakfast, but wish it filled you up a little more? The key to a good breakfast is making sure it has the power to carry you through the morning. One of the easiest ways to do this? Add a scoop of oats!

Think about it this way: A bowl of oats topped with your favorite fruit or nuts makes a seriously satisfying and nourishing start to the day. Well, oats can do the same thing for your smoothie. They make for a drink that's thicker, heartier, and all around more filling and nourishing. The fiber in oats helps to slow down digestion, which can stabilize your blood sugar levels. They even impart a subtle nutty flavor.

You can use any smoothie recipe and add oats to it. The amount of oats you'll add can vary depending on your smoothie recipe, but a good rule of thumb is about 1/4 cup cup of whole rolled oats per serving, up to 1/2 cup. Oats will thicken your smoothie. The amount you add will vary depending on how thick your smoothie already is. Remember: You can always add more. So if you're not quite sure about how much to add, start with less and then you can always use more until you get the consistency you like.

There are several ways to make oatmeal smoothies.

Here are some ideas to get you started.

FMM: Some of these recipes use 1/2 cup oatmeal, some use 1/4 cup. I like the Chocolate Overnight Oatmeal Smoothie made with 1/2 cup, but I wanted to use up some frozen fruit I had (pineapple, mango, and strawberry mix), and used 1/2 cup. I did add 1 Tbsp. chia seeds and 1 Tbsp. flax seeds, and it came out very thick. I had added 1 cup milk, but had to add a lot more. Maybe I should have added ice, but the fruit was very frozen and I had a hard time getting it chopped up in the blender. Ice seems to melt quickly and add extra liquid to the smoothie.

Fruit Version: This is good made without the cocoa powder. The combination of the almond butter, the extracts and maple syrup/honey is really good. The next day add about 1 cup frozen fruit, such as blueberries, and blend. I added yogurt to this blueberry version, which wasn't in the original recipe. This recipe is sort of a combination of this recipe and the Berry Oat Breakfast Smoothie.

The chocolate version is good with a frozen banana blended in.

1/2 cup (40 g) rolled oats
1 Tbsp (7 g) chia seeds [increase to 2 Tbsp to make more like a chia pudding]
1 Tbsp (16 g) natural almond butter
2 Tbsp (10 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup (240 ml) unsweetened vanilla almond milk
[1/3 cup vanilla yogurt or greek yogurt]
1 Tbsp (15 ml) maple syrup [or honey]
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
[1/2 tsp. almond extract]

The night before, add all ingredients to the bowl of your blender and give it a stir to ensure that everything is well combined. Cover and place in fridge for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight.

The next morning, blend until a smooth and creamy consistency is reached, adding more milk if smoothie is too thick. Transfer back to a bowl or glass, add desired toppings, and enjoy!

Note: Chia seeds start absorbing liquid and forming a gel coating within 5 to 10 minutes, but they need at least 15 to 20 minutes to properly expand and soften for safe digestion.

FMM: I added a frozen banana the next morning, poured it into a bowl and topped with pitted fresh cherries and toasted slivered almonds. It was good and it made a lot. I would like to try this without my additions as a drinkable smoothie. I tasted it before it was refrigerated overnight, and without my additions, and it was quite good.

Another time, I made the smoothie as written, but did not refrigerate overnight. I let it sit in the frig for about 20 - 30 minutes to let the oatmeal and chia seeds absorb liquid; it needed to be cooler. So I then added about 1/2 ice and whizzed it again in the blender. Quite good and would do this again.

Black Forest Smoothie
from http://www.runningwithspoons.com/

Technically speaking, it’s a chocolate cherry chia smoothie… Cherries and cocoa for some antioxidant awesomeness. Dates for an extra kick of natural sweetness. Oats for filling fiber. Chia seeds for healthy omega 3’s… Basically lots and lots of goodness in one ridiculously thick and creamy smoothie. You can even add a scoop of your favourite protein powder if you want a little extra oomph, or toss in a handful of spinach to help you get your greens in.

1 cup frozen cherries
1 - 2 (15 - 30 g) Medjool dates, depending on desired sweetness
1/4 cup (20 g) rolled oats
1 Tbsp (7 g) chia seeds
2 Tbsp (10 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup (240 ml) unsweetened almond milk
1 scoop (30 g) of your favourite protein powder (optional)
1 -2 handfuls of baby spinach (optional)

Place all ingredients into any standard blender and blend until smooth. This smoothie can be made in advance and stored in the fridge for extra thickness and creaminess. The longer it sits, the thicker it gets!

Note: Chia seeds start absorbing liquid and forming a gel coating within 5 to 10 minutes, but they need at least 15 to 20 minutes to properly expand and soften for safe digestion.

Berry Oat Breakfast Smoothie
from https://www.lecremedelacrumb.com/

See my variation I came up with for the Chocolate Overnight Oatmeal Smoothie that uses blueberries instead of cocoa. It was better than this recipe.

1 cup milk (more as needed)
1/2 cup frozen berries
3 tablespoons honey (or to taste)
1/3 cup vanilla yogurt or greek yogurt
1/4 cup ice

Add all ingredients to a blender. Cover tightly and pulse until ice is broken up, then puree until smooth. Taste and add sweeter if needed or milk if it is too thick. Serve immediately.

Pineapple Coconut Oatmeal Smoothie
from https://easyhealthysmoothie.com/

This particular recipe is like a non-frozen version of the famous cocktail, pina colada, only without alcohol and a lot thicker. Nonetheless, the flavor profile is very similar.

For best results, freeze your milk and pineapple beforehand so that it will make everything cooler and more refreshing.

1/4 cup oatmeal
One cup coconut milk
1/4 cup Greek yogurt
One cup frozen pineapple chunks
One teaspoon honey
1/3 teaspoon vanilla extract

Put all ingredients into a blender and mix until you get your desired consistency. For an added bit of zest, drizzle some honey (or agave syrup) over the smoothie when finished.
