Hazelnut Bars

Crust:

3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup confectioner's sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 large egg
2 cups flour

Topping:

3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 Tbsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. freshly grated orange peel
1 1/2 cups toasted hazelnuts

Grease a 13 x 9 inch baking pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

To make the crust, beat together the butter, confectioner's sugar, salt and egg. Gradually stir in the flour. Pat evenly in the prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 25 - 30 minutes until lightly browned.

To make the topping, melt the butter in a medium-sized pot. Stir in the honey, brown sugar, heavy cream, vanilla and orange peel. Remove from the heat and add the hazelnuts. Pour over the crust and bake for an additional 25 minutes.

Cool for 10 - 15 minutes. Cut into 2 x 1 inch squares before the bars completely cool.
