Jane's Sour Cream Cut-Out Cookies (uses extra egg yolk)

Jane used to make a lot of cut-outs at Christmas and had the kids over to decorate them. This is one of the recipes she used.

1/2 cup softened butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon mace
1 egg yolk
1/4 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour

Cream butter in large bowl with electric mixer. Add sugar, baking powder, soda, salt, and mace. Beat until combined.

Beat in egg yolk, sour cream, and vanilla. Beat in as much flour as you can with the electric mixer. Stir in the rest by hand.

Divide dough in half, cover, and chill 2 hours.

On floured surface, roll dough to 1/4 to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut shapes with 1 to 2 inch cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheet.

Bake 5 to 6 minutes for 1 inch cookies. 7 to 8 minutes for 2 inch cookies, til edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned.
