Jicama Salad

Jicama with lime juice and chile powder is a traditional, refreshing Mexican snack you can often buy from street vendors. The following is a fairly basic variation of the traditional snack, but jicama is extremely versatile, so don’t be afraid to throw in pineapple, cucumbers, watermelon, or anything else that strikes your fancy.

1 large jicama
1/4-cup fresh lime juice
1 Tbsp orange juice
1 tsp chile powder
1 tsp kosher salt
2 serrano chiles, seeded and diced
1 orange, segmented
1/2 red onion, peeled and thinly sliced
1/2 avocado, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Cut off both ends of the jicama. Use a knife to peel the skin from one cut end to the other. Slice the jicama into matchstick-sized pieces and place the pieces in a bowl.

Pour the lime and orange juice over the jicama. Add the remaining ingredients, except for the avocado, and combine.

Cover and chill for 30 minutes. Toss with the avocado before serving.
