Watermelon Slices

Watermelon Slices

Nothing says summer like a cold slice of sweet, juicy watermelon. This delicious treat brings back childhood memories of family picnics and seed-spitting contests.

Picking a tasty, ripe watermelon isn't hard, but it's more than just thwacking melons in the grocery store. Finding the perfect one is as simple as looking for a few simple signs. The the key to selecting the perfect watermelon is to first look for one that's a little dull: the shiny melons haven't had time in the sun to properly ripen. More importantly, look for a nice cream-colored field spot on the side of the melon—the darker the spot, the longer the melon has had to ripen in the sun. If you must thwack it, the body should be firm. If you hear a dull thud, the melon is underripe.

You can serve watermelon by the slice.
You can make watermelon balls.
For those of you who like to eat neat all the time: a big old watermelon scooped out makes a fanciful fresh fruit basket.
