Ranch Dressing Mix
Parsley, chives, onion, and garlic are the main herbs and seasonings in Ranch dressing. I found a great recipe for Ranch Dressing from scratch that uses yogurt instead of buttermilk (see Ranch Style Dressing). For the Ranch Dressing Mix on the left, you could use 1/2 cup sour cream, 1/4 cup plain yogurt, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
The Dressing Mix on the right includes powdered buttermilk that makes it extra convenient.
Ranch Seasoning Mix (seasonings only, no buttermilk)
4 tablespoons dried parsley
2 teaspoons dried dill weed
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
To make a single batch of ranch seasoning:
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Measure ingredients into a blender or mini food processor. Blend/pulse a few times until slightly broken down and well combined. Transfer the mixture to a small jar or other airtight container. Shake the seasoning mix well before measuring it out.
RANCH DRESSING: Whisk together 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup buttermilk, 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce [?], and 1 1/2 tablespoons Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix; stir until until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (preferably 8 hours or overnight).
Makes: 4 batches of dry seasoning (1 1/2 tablespoons each)
Another recipe suggests:
Dressing: In a bowl or jar combine 1/2 cup of mayonnaise and 1/2 cup buttermilk. Add 1 tablespoon mix and blend well.
Dip: In a small bowl blend 1 tablespoon mix with 1 cup sour cream. Refrigerate 1 hour before serving.
Give in decorative jars as gifts with directions below for dressing and dip.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (preferably 8 hours or overnight).
Ranch Dressing Mix (dried buttermilk)
1/2 cup dry buttermilk powder
2 tablespoons dried parsley
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
2 teaspoons dried chives
1 3/4 teaspoons garlic powder
1 1/4 teaspoons dried dill weed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
In a medium bowl, whisk all ingredients to combine. If you want a finer texture, feel free to place all the ingredients in a coffee grinder and blitz a few times. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container.
Because of the buttermilk powder, it needs to be stored in the refrigerator. It will keep up to 2 months.
To replace 1 store-bought ranch dressing mix packet, use 2 tablespoons of this ranch seasoning mix in its place:
Make ranch dressing or ranch dip
Use it as a rub for roast chicken
Mix it into stovetop popcorn
Sprinkle it over roasted carrots
Stir it into mashed potatoes
Use a dash to season smashed potatoes
Add a little to flour as a breading for oven baked chicken
Makes 12 tablespoons or 3/4 cup total
