Greek Burger w/ Tomato & Feta Cheese Salad

These burgers are delicious made with ground lamb, but if you can't find it, ground sirloin will be just as good.

FMM: These have great flavor and are a nice change from traditional American burgers. We are not fond of lamb and used ground beef instead. An alternative way to eat these burgers is to serve the salad on the side and top the burger with plain yogurt and tahini dressing. A really good Greek salad is Greek Country Salad. While very similar, you may want to serve the burgers with this salad instead of the one below.

Burgers
1 lb. ground lamb (or beef sirloin)
2 Tbs. grated onion
2 Tbs. finely chopped fresh mint
2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. lemon zest
1 tsp. salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbsp. pine nuts, toasted (optional)
4 pita bread, cut in half after toasting

Tomato Salad
2 large, ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks
1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced
1/4 cup pitted kalamata olives, sliced
2 tsp. olive oil
2 tsp. red-wine vinegar
1 Tbs. crumbled feta, or more

In bowl, mix salad ingredients. Set aside to marinate while you prepare burgers.

Heat grill. In medium bowl, gently mix lamb, onion, mint, spices, salt, garlic and pine nuts if using just to combine. Shape into 8 small patties. Grill burgers 4 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Toast the pita bread on the grill, then cut in half. Place a patty in an opened pita bread, and top with Tomato Salad.
