How To Stack A Burger
By stacking your burger in a certain manner, you can actually help tame the rogue condiments and escaping vegetables (we’re looking at you tomato) and enhance the flavor of your burger!
Bottom bun, toasted
Condiments: Sauce, mayo and other condiments can be slathered on either the top or bottom bun. If using two condiments, put one on the top and one on the bottom bun to avoid excess slipperiness on one end or the other.
Pickles: Toppings like pickles, which are small and often irregularly shaped, do best beneath the patty so they have something to weigh them down.
Patty: Next
Bacon, if using: The cheese keeps it in place and adds flavor to the burger.
Cheese: The cheese goes directly on top of the patty, letting the heat from the meat give it a little melt. Not only does this make it scrumptious, but it helps to hold the toppings above in place.
Onion: Onions should go closer to meat (say, right above the cheese) because it is good a bit warm and it can take the heat.
Tomato: Put the tomato on top of the burger/cheese to protect the lettuce. Warm lettuce is not great and it can get wilty and lose its crunch easily.
Lettuce: Lettuce has to go on the top so you get a nice fresh crunch before you sink into the meat and cheese.
