Sandwich Wrap Tips & Ideas
Sandwich wraps are quite probably the ideal lunch. They’re easy and quick to make, come in so many flavor combinations - you can literally put almost anything in them! - and they’re the perfect portable lunch. Wraps are the ideal lunch to bring to the office, pack in a picnic basket, add to your kiddo’s lunchbox, or take traveling.
The best ingredients for a wrap include a protein, veggies, cheese and a drizzle of homemade salad dressing or your favorite sandwich spread to hold it all together. This combo has enough texture and flavor to keep your interest and enough protein, fat and fiber to keep you full. The exact best ingredients depend on your preferences. Vegetarians and those who want to eat less meat can include tofu, tempeh, beans and lentils for a satisfying wrap.
To assemble: Place the ingredients across the tortilla. Fold in the sides slightly to create the ends of the wrap, fold up and roll from the bottom edge facing you. Finish by pressing down a bit on the seam, where the tortilla edges meet, so it stays closed.
To Prevent Soggy Wraps When Making Them Ahead
To prevent the wrap from becoming soggy when making them ahead, skip dressings or sauces when assembling and instead pack a small side of dressing to dip it in while eating. Avoid watery ingredients, like tomatoes and cucumbers, which can make your tortilla wet. When building your wrap, layer dry leafy greens, sliced cheese and deli meat against the wrap to create a moisture barrier from the other ingredients. If using cooked ingredients, like grilled chicken, let them cool completely to avoid trapping steam inside the wrap. And wait to cut the wrap in half until you’re ready to eat.
Sandwich Wrap Ideas
To fold a wrap so it stays intact, start with a large, slightly warmed tortilla to prevent tearing and cracking. For extra security, wrap it in parchment paper or foil, and slice in half if needed. Pan-fry your wrap in a little butter or use a panini press for a crispy exterior and gooey inside. Or seal the tortilla and place the wrap on the grill (or lightly oiled grill pan). Cook for a minute or 2 on both sides until it’s slightly warmed through but the grill marks are visible.
