Whiskey Sour

Whiskey Sours

The Whiskey Sour is probably the most popular of all the sour drinks and rightfully so, it is a great cocktail. It is sour, yes, but the sweetness of some whiskeys and simple syrup offset any tartness, especially the sweeter bourbons like Maker's Mark. Fresh lemon juice is key for the best Whiskey sour and the choice of whiskey will create a different cocktail depending on style and brand.

Whiskey Sours are traditionally shaken with ice and served "straight up" - strained into an old-fashioned or cordial glass without any extra ice. If served "on the rocks", strain ingredients into old fashioned glass filled with ice.

1 1/2 ounces whiskey (bourbon)
1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup
Crushed ice
1 maraschino cherry
Half an orange slice

Pour all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well.* Strain into old fashioned or cobbler glass (See Glassware) and serve "straight-up" or "on the rocks". Garnish with half orange slice and maraschino cherry.

*Water is added to a drink from the ice that is used to mix it with. The role of the water in any cocktail is to calm down the flavors all around and to reduce the "burn" of the alcohol. This is extremely important for creating a cocktail that is smooth and relaxing.
