Spooky Halloween Appetizers

Mexican Dip Spider Web
Give your basic Mexican dip an upgrade with this terrifyingly tasty recipe that layers refried beans with salsa, cheese and homemade guacamole, then finishes it off with a web of piped sour cream.

Cheeseball Pumpkins
These cheese pumpkins were made using a Wilson mold, but that does mean you can't try to shape your own if you don't have the molds. Shape into balls and refrigerate to make it easier to add the pumpkin ridges. Use orange colored cheese, such as Cheddar to give your cheeseballs a pumpkin color. Parsley sprigs lend bright green leaf color.

Halloween Deviled Eggs
Bloodshot Eyeball Deviled Eggs
Whip up a batch of creamy deviled eggs and then turn them into eerie-looking “eyeballs” with a few simple additions: use black olive slices for the pupils and thinly sliced pimiento for veins.

Or how about some Spidery Deviled Eggs?
Use halved black olives to create the spider body and and thin strips to create the legs.

Marinated Mozzarella Eyeballs
from http://dabbled.org/
These are delicious, and suitably creepy!
Supplies:
Big firm olives (black & green)
A large diameter drinking straw
Marinated mini mozzarella balls (available at Trader Joe's, or make your own)
Optional: jarred red pepper slices
Technique:
You basically use the olives to make your nice rounded iris and pupil. Slice off the end of a green olive, then use your straw to punch a hole in the center. Then use the straw to punch out a plug of black olive. Then place the black piece in the hole of your green olive. If it doesn't stay level with the green, you can use a little cream cheese stuffed in the open back end of the olive to hold the black in place. Note: You can make red pupils by using jarred roasted red pepper, peeled, instead of the black olives.
Once you have enough irises for all your mozzarella balls, you simply arrange the balls on a platter, and top with your olive slices. Depending on the shape of your balls, you may need to slice off a little of the top to get a flat surface on which to sit your olive eye.
Drizzle the whole thing with the marinade from the package, and optionally stab each eyeball with a toothpick for added 'ewww' factor and ease of serving!

Decayed Corpse Skin Chips with Entrail Salsa
(featured inside the book Eerie Elegance)
This isn't so much a recipe as it is a creative display. Arrange the blue corn chips in a coffin in the shape of a long-dead corpse, or if you have a plastic skeleten, place around the skeleten as if dead skin that has flaked off. The natural blue corn chips have almost a dusky shade of brown in them that hints of decayed skin. Serve with a nice blood-red chunky salsa as accompanying entrails. Set the crystal bowl of "entrails" (salsa) between his calves...yummm...
If you cannot find a coffin, find a clean plastic skull or assorted bones, put them in a large serving bowl, then arrange the blue chips around the bones as the decaying flesh!

Human Brain Shrimp Spread
The Brain Shrimp Spread in the picture uses a special brain mold available from Halloween outlets, but you could try shaping your own. Find a picture of the brain and mimic the shape and grooves.
Mom's Shrimp Dip would work well for making the molded version.

Puking Pumpkin
Looking for a spooky way to lay out your guacamole for your Halloween party? Try carving a pumpkin to look like it is puking guacamole. It is sure to make your guest spooked out: gross, yummy and Halloweeny.
The idea is simple; take your favorite dip--green ones are especially good--and let it flow from your pumpkin's gaping mouth. Try guacamole, french onion dip, or hummus and babaganoush for some Middle Eastern flair. Don't forget the dippers: tortilla chips, sliced veggies, pita bread, etc. to match the dip.

Mummy Mini Pizzas
Make and bake mini pizzas. While pizzas are baking tear 1 string cheese for each pizza into thin strips. Remove pizzas from oven and place 2 olive slices on each for eyes. Layer cheese strips in random fashion to resemble mummy bandages. Trim any strips that are too long. Return to oven and bake an additional 1-2 minutes to melt cheese slightly.

Yummy Mummy Cookies
From Hershey's. Homemade chocolate cookie wrapped in white milk chocolate. The eyes are mini chocolate chips.

Spider Web Cupcakes
Spoon chocolate glaze over baked chocolate cupcakes. Using vanilla or caramel glaze, create spider web designs: Pipe concentric circles onto the top of a cupcake. Lightly draw the tip of a wooden skewer, toothpick or paring knife from the center of the cupcake outward to the edge, occasionally alternating the direction, if you wish. For the cleanest look, wipe the tip of the skewer after each draw.
The same technique can be used with iced round cookies, such as Pumpkin Cookies. These are soft cookies with a brown sugar glaze that this technique would work good on.
I would aim for a black frosting with a white spiderweb.

Witches' Fingers Cookies
These gruesome hand-shaped cookies have almonds for fingernails. The red around the nails comes from red decorator gel. Witchy!

Skeleton Bones Cookies
This Halloween, get in the spirit of things and create some gruesome skeleton bone cookies. While not a true meringue cookie, this recipe uses just egg whites to keep the bones white in color, and adds some chopped almonds to give them a creepy "bone-crunch!"
