ORGANIC FOODS AND PESTS
What does "organically grown foods" mean? Generally, it means that the food was grown without man-made chemical pesticides and fertilizers that most farmers use. These man-made fertilizers and pesticides help to boost the yield of crops; which in turn, lowers the cost of the products, in many cases almost 50%, to the consumer.
It is wise to thoroughly wash any fruits or vegetables, being exceptionally thorough in the washing of products which were imported from other countries because pesticide regulations vary from country to country.
Although pests are not life threatening (in most cases they are harmless, being "good protein"), it is nonetheless unappetizing to find them in our foodstuffs.
Commercially grown vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, are relatively free of pests due to growers spraying for control. However, if by chance, you obtain pests along with your vegetables, do not throw the vegetables away. Soak the vegetables in cold salt water for fifteen minutes this will kill off the pests and they can be washed off by running cold water over the vegetables.
Insects are sometimes discovered in flour and other grain products. These products should be disposed of as its impossible to remove the insects and larva. Containers and cupboards in which they were stored should be thoroughly cleaned. Store grain products in tightly sealed glass or plastic containers, not paper or cardboard. It is said that a bay leaf in the container will keep the pests away worth a try.
